PTDF SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

The Scholarship Schemes of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund are part of PTDF Human Capital Development objectives to provide skilled manpower to meet the demands of the oil and gas industry.

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) awards two types of Scholarships. They are the Overseas Scholarship Scheme and the Local Scholarship Scheme.

THE OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME (OSS)

The PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme is designed to meet the human capacity requirements of the oil and gas industry through the training of young Nigerians in oil and gas related fields of Engineering, Geology, Environmental Studies, Sciences, Management, Law, Accounting, Renewable Energy, Information Technology and offshore related course in top rated universities around the world, to facilitate knowledge transfer. The study centers for the scholarship awards are universities in the United Kingdom, China, Germany, France, and the United States.

The PTDF overseas Scholarship Scheme is an annual programme for MSc and PhD studies. The purpose is to provide Nigerian students with the intellectual foundation and skill set that will enable them to participate actively in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry at the conclusion of their studies. The sponsorship duration is between twelve (12) and twenty-four (24) months for MSc, and thirty-six months (36) months for PhD. There are no awards for undergraduate studies under the scheme.

SELECTION PROCESS, CRITERIA AND REQUIREMENTS

PTDF scholarships are highly competitive and only candidates who are outstanding across the board are selected.  Academic merit as evidenced by quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired and relevant publications to be referenced by applicant (PhD applicants only). Membership of professional bodies, the viability of the study/research plan. Applicants are required to make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) they want to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the industry and its expected impact on national development.

REQUIREMENTS

MSc

  • A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience
  • Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
  • Must be computer literate
  • Possession of 5 O/level credits including English Language.

PhD

  • Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
  • Must be computer literate
  • A minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree and a good second-degree certificate;
  • Must submit a research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than 5 pages) to include: Topic, introduction, objective, methodology and mode of data collection;
  • Applicants must also include their masters degree project

PTDF POST GRADUATE OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP UNDER STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH GERMANY, FRANCE, CHINA AND UK UNIVERSITIES

The Strategic Partnership Scholarship was developed to improve the Funds’ Overseas Scholarship Scheme by offering candidates the opportunity to benefit from a diversified pool of knowledge and the facilities offered by world-class institutions across the globe.

In recognition of the fact that the best education can be found on numerous shores, the Fund has sought out strategic partnerships in Germany, France and China where candidates are offered the opportunity to study in English-taught classes and conduct research in world-class facilities where they will also have the opportunity of experiencing new cultures and work environments.

Under this scheme, candidates can apply through PTDF to specific programmes at the partner institutions in any of the four (4) countries. The award includes the provision of flight tickets, payment of health insurance, payment of tuition and bench fees (where applicable) as well as the provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses. The programmes will also include language classes to aid scholars settle into their new environments

OBLIGATIONS OF THE SCHOLAR

The scholar undertakes to be of good behavior, committed and dedicated to his/her studies.

He/she undertakes to complete his studies within the period stipulated in the letter of award.

The scholar accepts that no extension of period of study shall be considered by the Fund unless under special/extreme circumstances.

The scholar agrees that in the event of his inability to complete his studies within the stipulated duration, he will be liable to refund all monies invested on him by the Fund during the subsistence of the programme.

The scholar agrees that the scholarship may be terminated by the Fund without notice at any time and no reason shall be advanced to the scholar for that decision.

The scholar shall immediately, following the completion of his study programme return to Nigeria to contribute meaningfully towards the growth of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PTDF OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

 

  • Provides scholars with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities to contribute to national development.
  • Enables scholars to exploit opportunities available within the industry both locally and globally.
  • Provides specific knowledge and key transferable skills that will enable scholars to cope with the practices and likely changes in the industry.

KEY EXPECTATIONS OF THE FUND

  • Focus on and engage effectively in academic work
  • Act as exemplary ambassadors of the Fund
  • Acknowledge the Fund in any publications that are of Academic value
  • Focus on studies aimed at solving challenges specific to the Nigerian oil and gas industry;
  • Share new discoveries with the Fund and partner to patent and commercialize research findings
  • Should have no other scholarships
  • Return to Nigeria after study to contribute to National growth and development

OTHER FACTORS GUIDING THE SELECTION OF CANDIDATES FOR THE AWARD OF PTDF OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP

  • Federal Character: Under which all States/Geopolitical Zones are given equal number of scholarships
  • Merit: Under which the highest scorers from each state and the Federal Capital Territory/Geopolitical Zones are selected for the awards.
  • Oil producing states: In which additional scholarship slots are given to each of the oil producing states.
  • Gender Sensitivity: In which the best female candidate(s) with the highest scores from each of the six Geopolitical Zones are awarded scholarships.
