A total of 379 scholars who were awarded the 2017/2018 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS) in the MSc and PhD categories participated in a four-day induction programme held between the 12th and 15th of September, 2017. The induction which is a prelude to their departure for studies in different universities abroad was organized by the Fund to expose the beneficiaries to life as PTDF sponsored students abroad as well as the financing of the scholarship programme.

Out of the 379 recipients of the PTDF scholarship, 194 were for MSc and 185 for PhD. For the MSc award, the nine oil producing states got 6 each while the remaining 27 none oil producing states and the FCT got 5 slots each. For the PhD scholarship, each State and the FCT received 5 lots.

It will be recalled that the selection process for the award of the scholarship by PTDF to deserving Nigerians began on Saturday July 8th, 2017 where over 4,949 applicants from the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT, sat for the Electronic Aptitude Test for the Award of the MSc scholarship.  The selection interview for the PhD category held between July 24 to 28, 2017 where a total of 1008 candidates were interviewed by a Central Selection Committee (CSC) panel drawn from the academia, oil and gas industry and research institutes.

In his address to the scholars, the Executive Secretary PTDF, Dr. Bello Aliyu Gusau, said that PTDF scholarship is a globally acclaimed programme with beneficiaries studying in globally acclaimed universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Norway, China, Brazil, Middle-East, Canada, USA even and Australia.  “So there is hardly any important institution anywhere around the globe where the PTDF is not represented. Most important is the fact that, the beneficiaries of this exercise have been recording remarkable successes in their studies. Not only are we expecting the required diligence during your studies but we urge you to go beyond the extra mile to excel in whatever you do”.  He said.

Dr. Gusau also reminded the scholars that they are not only representing themselves, their families or even the PTDF, but Nigeria as a whole. “Wherever you find yourself you are representing the whole of Nigeria.  You must respect and obey the rules and regulations of the universities where you are going to study, but more importantly you must respect and obey the laws and regulations of the host countries where you are going to stay”.
